Our Partnerships
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is an official collegiate chapter and student-driven organization that has produced, and continues to produce, Baja and Formula-style vehicles. The build process of these vehicles is done through the emulation of a professional engineering firm. As the academic year progresses, SAE produces and revises each of these cars and gives students the chance to apply the theory taught in the classroom into SAE’s projects. SAE and its members share the opportunity to participate and compete in the annual SAE International competition.
Project Overview
The main objective of Baja SAE is to provide students and members of SAE at CSULB with a project that revolves around planning and manufacturing a new product to specifications provided by the consumer. 50+ teams from different universities compete against one another to have their design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. SAE students and members must function as a team to design, build, test, promote and race a vehicle within the specifications while generating financial support for the project. This has been the main project as of 2019.
The Baja Vehicle Project
Scope of Work
SAE at CSULB allows for hands-on experience, including the following:

Design
- Using SolidWorks, members design 90% of the car.

Workshops
- During the academic year and during academic breaks, leads and members offer workshops focusing on learning new software, aiding in possible future SAE projects and at work experience.

Machining
- With the knowledge from a manufacturing class taught on campus and aid from shop techs, members can machine various parts. -
Fabrication
- Members also learn and along with others, cut, bend, weld, and install all parts onto the vehicle. -
Marketing Strategies
- Members find the best way to present the product to a prospecting company. -
Business Planning
- Members find the least expensive way to make the product while staying within specifications.
